Safeguard Iowa Thanks Outgoing Director Adam Porath for his Service and Welcomes Sergeant Ryan Purdy to our Board of Directors
SIP Chair Lacey Hogan recently presented outgoing Director Adam Porath with a SIP Certificate of Appreciation for his service to the Board of Directors. Adam submitted his resignation following his reassignment to a position of increased responsibility with the West Des Moines Police Department. Safeguard Iowa thanks him for his continued support of our organization and mission. We wish him all the best in his new assignment. |
The SIP Board of Directors elected Ryan Purdy to fill the remaining term of Director Porath at their quarterly meeting in March. Ryan is a Sergeant with the West Des Moines Police Department, where he has worked for 18 years. Ryan is currently the supervisor for the Community Outreach Programs and Services Unit. This unit provides training and resources to area businesses, schools, places of worship and private citizens in a wide variety of topics from bicycle safety to active shooter training and incident management. The unit also provides all inner department training ranging from implicit bias to firearms and defensive tactics. Ryan additionally serves as an Executive Officer on the Suburban Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.). Ryan has served in multiple roles within SERT since 2009. Ryan received a bachelor’s degree in criminology from the University of Northern Iowa. |

Safeguard Iowa Welcomes John Halbrook Director of Corporate Security and Resiliency at MidAmerican Energy to our Board of Directors |
The SIP Board of Directors at their quarterly meeting in December elected John Halbrook with MidAmerican Energy Corporation to fill the vacant private sector position on the Board of Directors created following Director Joe Russell's transition to a Honorary Partnership Member. Thanks to John for agreeing to serve our organization in this vital position. |
John is currently serving as the Director of Corporate Security and Resiliency where he oversees multiple programs and workflows. Prior to his time with MidAmerican, John was the Program Coordinator at the Safeguard Iowa Partnership, and a program planner at the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. John’s passion for emergency response and coordination stems from his time as a firefighter and paramedic in central Iowa where he worked as a both a volunteer and career first responder. |

Following a Mailroom Security Assessment on March 20th with their staff and managers, SIP provided a hybrid (in-person and virtual) Suspicious Mail Identification and Response Training for all mailroom personnel and others who routinely handle and open mail, packages, and internal correspondence for one of our private sector partners in downtown Des Moines. |

A second session was conducted on Feb 27th at the Clear Creek Amana High School for District Staff. Our thanks to Johnson County Emergency Management for their partnership in delivering this important training. |
Thanks to our partners with Hamilton County Emergency Management, Webster City Area Chamber of Commerce, Webster City and Hamilton County Development for hosting our Business Continuity Training on February 8th. We appreciated all the local private-sector organizations and non-profits who jumped on board for this fast and furious ride toward improved preparedness for any future emergencies or disasters. |
Our thanks to Keokuk County Emergency Management and Public Health for hosting Safeguard Iowa for an Active Threat/Active Shooter Training Workshop and Tabletop Exercise in Sigourney, IA on January 25, 2024. It was a great day of training with many of our public and private sector partners in attendance. |
Thanks to our partners with Clinton County Emergency Management and Grow Clinton for hosting a great day of Business Continuity Training on Nov. 17th in Clinton, IA. We had awesome engagement and discussion from a diverse cross-section of local private-sector organizations who "invested" a few hours to be better prepare for emergencies or disasters. |

November has been a busy month for Safeguard Iowa, conducting numerous Active Threat Response Trainings for our Public and Private Sector Partners across Iowa including the future officers of AFROTC Detachment 255 at the University of Iowa. |
Together. Helping Iowans. Safeguard Iowa and our longtime private-sector partner, Hy-Vee, once again responded to Iowan's in need following a water main break in Ackley, IA on November 1, 2023 that left the towns residents without potable water. In coordination with Hardin County Emergency Management, Ackley Fire Department and community volunteers, Hy-Vee Disaster Relief was on-scene within eight hours with an emergency supply of bottled water to help the town get through this local disaster. Job well done! |
Partnering with Washington County Emergency Management, Safeguard Iowa brought Active Threat / Active Shooter Training and a TTX to Washington, IA on October 25th. The focus of the training was on preparedness and response for the county's five retirement communities. Thanks to all the participants for their engagement. |

Safeguard Iowa Chair Welcomes Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Greg Smith to our Board of Directors |
On September 12, 2023, the Chair of the Safeguard Iowa Partnership Board of Directors, AJ Mumm, announced the results of the membership's elections for the 2024 SIP Board of Directors. Greg Smith, Cedar Rapids Fire Department. was elected to fill the vacant Public Sector Director position on the Board for 2024 and by a majority vote of the BOD, will fill the remaining unexpired term through 31 DEC 2023. Greg has been the Cedar Rapids Fire Chief since April 2019. Patrick Waymire, Iowa Department of Public Safety, was elected to serve a consecutive Public Sector Board term and will serve as the 2024 Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Pat is currently the Assistant Director for the Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center for the Iowa Department of Public Safety. Joe Russell, Summit Agriculture Group, was also elected to serve a consecutive Private Sector Board term and serve as the 2024 Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors.
